Welcome to the LDV NNR ringing blog, this blog is designed to share the experiences, findings and tales from a group of dedicated ringers. We specialise in conservation orientated research projects, largely focusing on wildfowl, waders, owls and birds of conservation concern, in and around the Vale of York NNR's.

NB - Whilst the purpose of this blog was initially designed to cover our nationally important wildfowl ringing activities, it now also features wildlife and work posts, explaining how we manage the NNR for both wildlife and people.

Lower Derwent Valley NNR - January Sightings

The start of the new year began where December left off with extensive flooding throughout the site, although water levels did finally start to recede towards the end of the month. A great start to the year was had with the highlight being an American Wigeon present between the 16th and 18th, with up to two Bewick’s Swans, three Smew and six Scaup all notable (remaining from December). Common Crane on the 9th and Cattle Egret between the 21st and 24th provided additional interest.

Wintering wildfowl were well represented with 167 Whooper Swans, 2271 Greylag and 2000 Pink-footed Geese along with a single White-fronted and Tundra Bean. Raptors were also notable with two Hen Harriers, five Marsh Harriers, five Peregrines and the usual Merlin and Red Kite records. On the wader front 4600 Lapwing, 1760 Golden Plover and 1200 Dunlin were highlights, with the Dunlin count in particular being the highest for several years. 2,000+ Snipe flooded back onto the reserve later in the month with perhaps as many as 100 Jack Snipe scattered through the wider area. A flock of 13 Grey Plover through North Duffield Carrs on the 13th was a notable record with a build-up of 34 Curlew and 74 Black-tailed Godwits as the month progressed. The gull roosts were also well covered and held two Caspian and at least five different Mediterranean Gulls.

Many thanks as always to everyone who contributed records and counts throughout the month, in particular to members of York Birding and regular patch birder Duncan Bye. Thanks also to Duncan Bye, Trevor Walton and Dave Ward for the use of their images below.
