Welcome to the LDV NNR ringing blog, this blog is designed to share the experiences, findings and tales from a group of dedicated ringers. We specialise in conservation orientated research projects, largely focusing on wildfowl, waders, owls and birds of conservation concern, in and around the Vale of York NNR's.

NB - Whilst the purpose of this blog was initially designed to cover our nationally important wildfowl ringing activities, it now also features wildlife and work posts, explaining how we manage the NNR for both wildlife and people.

Lower Derwent Valley NNR - April Sightings

April was an exciting month with winter visitors overlapping with summer migrants and some notable passage. The record-breaking spring Whooper Swan passage logged 2,992 birds moving north-west, although several herds were also logged on nocturnal passage, so the true figure was undoubtedly higher. A single White-fronted Goose lingered during the month and the drake American Wigeon made a re-appearance early on. Two pairs and two or three additional Garganey were present, with one or two pairs showing incredibly well daily on ‘Tom’s Ponds’ at Bank Island. Three pairs of Cattle Egrets were present amongst the 36 pairs of Little Egrets with a Spoonbill south (23rd) and sightings of three Common Cranes. Five passage Black-necked Grebes were logged with a fine summer plumaged Slavonian Grebe at Bank Island (11th) and Wheldrake (12th-24th) - the first in summer plumage to be recorded on the site.

Six Ospreys were recorded during the month (bringing the total to nine for the spring) with a Hen Harrier seen again on the 4th. The first returning Hobby (9th) was the second earliest ever with double figure counts by month end. The highlight on the wader front was the build-up in passage Black-tailed Godwits, with a record 1,270 (2nd). The spring passage Whimbrel roost started from the 11th whilst other notable records included Avocet, Wood Sandpiper and Grey Plover. A Little Gull (3rd) and a record-breaking 240 Arctic Terns passed through North Duffield Carrs (22nd) along with two Sandwich Terns. A Little Tern was also present at Bank Island on the 30th – the first for several years.

First returning migrant dates included Willow Warbler and Swallow (2nd), Yellow Wagtail (5th), House Martin and Sedge Warbler (7th), Cuckoo (10th), Reed Warbler (12th), Whitethroat (13th), Lesser Whitethroat (16th), and Garden Warbler and Swift (22nd).

Many thanks as always to everyone who contributed records and counts throughout the month, in particular to members of York Birding and regular patch birder Duncan Bye. Thanks also to Duncan Bye, Adam Firth, Oliver Metcalf, Darren Starkey, Dave Ward and Trevor Walton for the use of their images below.
