Welcome to the LDV NNR ringing blog, this blog is designed to share the experiences, findings and tales from a group of dedicated ringers. We specialise in conservation orientated research projects, largely focusing on wildfowl, waders, owls and birds of conservation concern, in and around the Vale of York NNR's.

NB - Whilst the purpose of this blog was initially designed to cover our nationally important wildfowl ringing activities, it now also features wildlife and work posts, explaining how we manage the NNR for both wildlife and people.

Lower Derwent Valley NNR - August Sightings

August is typically a quieter month especially if water levels remain low (as was the case), at least allowing good conditions for site management to be carried out. Waterfowl numbers were unsurprisingly low with Cattle Egret (11th), Great White Egret (several dates) and a single calling but unseen Common Crane (17th) being the highlights. The dry conditions did produce sightings of Water Rails from several sites – at least six broods and a minimum of eleven young were noted. Raptors were well represented with another returning Osprey on the 25th, the first of two local Hen Harriers (6th) and the first returning Merlin (8th). Good numbers of Red Kites and Marsh Harriers remained throughout, and three pairs of Hobbies were located to their nest site fledging ten young.

Wader passage continued with small numbers of Little Ringed Plover, Ringed Plover, Black-tailed Godwit and Dunlin, whilst 12 Curlew remained for much of the month with one or two passage flocks of Whimbrel recorded on overnight movements. Four or five Greenshank were also noted with up to 26 Green Sandpipers scattered throughout the site (16 of which were using the pool at Wheldrake Ings). Gulls were also a feature during the month with small gatherings on arable following the harvest – including several Yellow-legged, Mediterranean (two) and a single Caspian.

Other passage movements included a Turtle Dove (11th), six Tree Pipits, a showing of Whinchats and four Wheatears, whilst a fall of warblers on the 13th included two Grasshopper Warblers caught and ringed at Wheldrake, where ringers also noted several young Cetti’s Warblers.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed records and counts throughout the month, in particular to members of York Birding and regular patch birder Duncan Bye - thanks also to Duncan for the use of his photographs below.
