Welcome to the LDV NNR ringing blog, this blog is designed to share the experiences, findings and tales from a group of dedicated ringers. We specialise in conservation orientated research projects, largely focusing on wildfowl, waders, owls and birds of conservation concern, in and around the Vale of York NNR's.

NB - Whilst the purpose of this blog was initially designed to cover our nationally important wildfowl ringing activities, it now also features wildlife and work posts, explaining how we manage the NNR for both wildlife and people.

Lower Derwent Valley NNR - March Sightings

One of the highlights of the month was the usual spring passage movement of Whooper Swans - a minimum of 1510 birds passed through the site during the month, with peaks of 376 on the 7th, 255 on the 16th and 300+ on the 17th. Although this is now an established annual movement in the valley, numbers are increasing year on year, with this year being the largest yet. Smaller numbers of Pink-footed Geese were also involved, with 489 on the 3rd followed by 1000 through on the 4th, whilst smaller flocks lingered. The drake Green-winged Teal reappeared and was present between the 16th – 31st, but was very mobile during this time amongst the 4300 Eurasian Teal. The first returning Garganey (two females and a drake) were at Wheldrake on the 19th, whilst two pairs of Mandarin were present on private ponds near Thorganby between the 1st – 4th. Little Egret numbers increased to 24, including a returning breeding bird colour-ringed here last year, whilst a Great White Egret was recorded with a Common Crane on the 13th.

Three Avocets flew south on the 20th and were followed by the first returning Little Ringed Plover (22nd), Grey Plover (26th) with a small passage of Golden Plover and Jack Snipe also noted. The wader highlight was the arrival of a large flock of Black-tailed Godwits late in the month, with 160 on the 19th, 195 on the 23rd and 166 on the 26th. A single adult Mediterranean Gull (1st) and first winter Iceland Gull (1st and 21st) were the pick of the gulls, although the annual spring passage of Lesser Black-backed Gulls saw small numbers move through the site.

Up to three Water Pipits were present at Melbourne Ings (13th – 24th) with seven singing Woodlarks at Skipwith Common NNR - this site also hosted a long staying first year female Hen Harrier during the month.

The end of the month received less coverage due to the current government restrictions, however the first returning migrants logged were Chiffchaff (9th), Sand Martin (12th), Swallow (25th) and Blackcap (27th).

Many thanks as always to everyone who contributed records throughout the month, in particular to members of the YOC, and regular LDV birder Duncan Bye. Thanks also to those who have contributed photographs - Jack Ashton-Booth (JAB), Duncan Bye (DB), Stuart Campbell (SC), Clive Featherstone (CF), Tim Jones (TJ) and Jono Leadley (JL).
